By knowing how people share content you can get your content shared more by emphasising these sharing outlets on your site, and making it easy for people to share with them.
There is no shortage of Social Media sites. Two of my Facebook friends, Brian Solis and Jesse Thomas, collaborated to create the conversation prism to help make sense of the very long tail of social media.

When it comes to sharing everyone has different preferences and habits. But the simple fact is that some social media sites are more successful than others, and as such deserve more attention.
This next graphic shows some important information about the way people share.
The social media landscape has changed since this graphic was created in July of 09. Facebook has added a few hundred million users, and twitter has grown by leaps and bounds as well and is now the 10th most visited site on the Internet.
If the above graph were to be updated it would likely show that Twitter is used for sharing more often than email, and Facebook sharing has likely increased as well. This in mind Twitter and Facebook sharing buttons are a must.

If you have a WordPress blog you can maximize sharing potential by installing the Digg Digg plugin (to get those snazzy floating buttons to the left) and to get the animated sharing buttons I have at the bottom of this post install the Sexy bookmarks plugin.

Where your content will be shared really depends on the type of content you have, and how easy it is for people to share your content.
Make sure you have social sharing plugins installed and people will use them.
Get your content rolling by sharing it yourself. Social proof has a very real effect on sharing and once your content is shared the odds that it will be shared again increases.

The tweets per day keep going up, which means more noise than ever. Despite the noise on Twitter if you can stand out with quality content the opportunity for you to get many shares and go viral on Twitter is greater than ever!
Looking to the future it is good to keep in mind where time is being spent online so that you know what audience to target your content towards.
Facebook has emerged as a clear leader in terms of on site time, and the trend of time spent on Facebook seems to suggest that people will be spending more time on Facebook in the months to come.
